Sacred Space – What it is

The sacred space, or the room within our hearts, is an inner room, where our greatest treasure lies hidden – an often unknown wealth. Finding and entering the sacred space within us will make us unswervingly peaceful. No matter what happens to us in our life we’ll remain calm, happy. This is because it is in this room that we meet our innermost self, the place where we find an inexhaustible source of strength and inspiration.

To help us approach this room, ancient Indian wisdom texts compare our body to a city of nine gates – two eyes, two ears, two nostrils, one mouth, an anus and a genital – through which information and energy travel constantly, like visitors. In this city the house of the heart stands out, and in that house the treasure is hidden in a special room called the dahara akash. This room is tiny, by material estimation, but spiritually, it’s so large that the whole universe fits inside it. This is the room where the eternal soul (atma) lives in the presence of the Divine. The Upanishads declare that those who find this room will discover their true heart’s desire.

This room has been called all kinds of things, but any genuine spiritual tradition knows of it. Some call it “the sky of the heart,” others “the lotus” or “temple” of the heart. Some spiritualists prefer to describe it as a state of consciousness, or even as being in balance. Yogis call it the “yoga zone” – that place where asanas flow without conscious effort. All these descriptions refer to the same heart roomthe sacred space.
